Workshop Description:
This 3-day intensive brings together the worlds of print and ceramics into one practice through the hands of Nathan Goddard. Goddard will be presenting at this year’s MCAA Michigan Mud 2025 conference in Kalamazoo, Michigan at Western Michigan University on Friday, May 16th and Saturday, May 17th. This firing will bookend the conference starting on Thursday, May 8th to Saturday, May 10th with unloading on Sunday, May 18th.
We will spend the first day of the workshop getting to know one-another, glazing and loading our bisqued work into our 80 sq. foot cross-draft, catenary arch kiln, “Seraphina”. The following day, we will brick the door and light the kiln. Attendees will rotate shifts stoking the kiln while our presenter, Nathan Goddard, demonstrates his work processes in wheel throwing, form altering techniques, and a mix of expressive mono-print transfers. Attendees will have the opportunity to get some hands-on experience with making their own mono-print transfers with Speedball Underglazes. We will end the second day continuing to stoke the kiln and gather with our community for a potluck and artist talk (open to the public). The final day of the workshop will be focused on firing off the kiln and more demonstrations from Nathan. Once Seraphina reaches temperature, we will depart for the week and reconvene on the following Sunday after Michigan Mud to unload. On unloading day we will gather with a potluck, discuss the firing results, clean up the kiln area, and celebrate our hard work!
